I have company coming. Mother and my sister from Charlotte for sure; maybe a sister who lives in Kansas City too.

Mother wants to (once again) look for a place in Wichita to live. We've been through this before and I learned some lessons. I hope there aren't new lessons. Mother knows she should sell her house in an isolated area more than an hour from health care and further from family while she is still healthy, able to make new friends and a life she enjoys in a new city. But her money doesn't go as far here as she expects.

I will make new mistakes because I learned from last time her finances are her business and she is competent and capable of deciding how much she can afford! Thank you!

Please think of me over the next few days as Mother says one day she wants to rent until she becomes reacquainted with Wichita and the next day she says renting is just throwing money away. In fact, during the last week she has asked me to line up everything from apartments / patio homes / duplexes (maybe she will become a landlord!). Oh my, lions and tigers and bears lurk unless I am capable of smiling while she drives the ship. At least, I called in back up in the form of sister(s)...

Oh, sounds stressful Linda!

If it makes you feel any better, my fiance is in New Jersey for the next two weeks, and here I am alone with a three year old who has a track record of eating things he shouldnt, a 3 month old dog who really likes my shoes, a wedding in 3 weeks to finish planning, and work and life in general to manage :) I can't wait for him to get home!

OK, Wendy! Point taken (even tho you never intended to make it!). I'll take time spent driving my Mother and Sisters (two for sure now) around looking at possible new living spaces and in the meantime spending time with people I really enjoy with no further complaining or apprehension! Just hope Mother has forgotten that "become a landlord" idea as neither Wayne nor I want another place to maintain. We've talked off and on about a patio home for us!

Mother grew up during the Great Depression. We could all learn how to stretch a penny from her! Today's economy has her tightening a well-cinched belt even tighter! She isn't wealthy by any means but won't use all her money not because there is a lot but because she will make it last (even if she lives to be 130!).

Linda, no words of wisdom here, other than to point out the obvious; this is a good time to be a prospective buyer.

What my mother did (this was right for her) was to get out of a house and into an "independent living" sixplex after her knee surgery. This is, by no stretch of the imagination, inexpensive. However, given what she was expending for the basic maintenance, taxes, insurance, etc., the difference wasn't so great that she couldn't do it. She now happily (maybe not every day) at age 80 goes to her morning job, comes home, enjoys her afternoons and evenings, doesn't have to worry about mowing the yard, raking the leaves; can do a bit of gardening in the area provided; if something isn't working, just calls and the nice maintenance folks are right there to take care of it; all in all, she's contented. If she's contented, the lineal descendants are contented. It doesn't get much simpler than that.

The Wife got a part-time job!
Woo-hoo!
She's been digusted with the volunteer work at church for a while. Besides being dead broke.
I'm just glad she's well enough to work for now!

And, Linda, it looks like the weather won't be too big a factor in the journeys around Wichita; well, if the forecast is accurate. At least we're not looking at the mess the Mainers are facing; after a whole lot of snow recently, they now face rain (potential for flooding from the melting snow) followed by freezing rain, then more snow (only 1" to 3" this time), followed by freezing rain, then... I still wonder at times about the younger's sanity.

Great news Tracy! Both that the wife is well enough so quickly to take a job and that extra money will be coming in.

Mother drove from Shell Knob to Fayetteville, Arkansas this morning and has called to say she met my sister's plane from Charlotte. So they are on the road and expected about dinner time. The KC sister has called to say she is on the road with stops to be made so sounds like they will all arrive about the same time. We will visit and relax tonight and start the search bright and early tomorrow!

Yes, Vaughn, whatever Mother does I sure hope it is maintenance included! That is her intent - or, at least, most days. She won't actually make any decisions this visit just check options (I think). She hasn't sold her property and I think wants to do that before relocating. I told both sisters IF there is a dissenting opinion that needs to be expressed one or both of them must do that. After all, she isn't moving to the city either of them live in! They will only visit her like always.

I will be a gracious hostess this week making sure the towels are kept clean, the meals and other needs met. I will drive wherever Mother wants me to drive. Did I tell you she called both the Wichita Housing Authority and the Chamber of Commerce and is arriving with the packets they sent her? Did I also mention she is quite independent?

Linda,

At least she is proactive about it, and trying to go about it the right way. So many people make impulsive decisions about things like that, and really, they shouldn't. I can't imagine how difficult that must be. The only other thing I would suggest is perhaps looking into some condos - I know a lot of them have association fees, which can be a turn off, however, if she winds up in a newer home here, she will have specials and homeowner's association fees as well, so not really any different, and with condo's, they maintain the lawn, etc for you as well... And many condos are decently sized, without being too large - along the lines of a large apartment rather than a house, which may be more to her liking if she doesn't want a large space to have to keep clean inside... but Vaughn is right, it is definitely a buyers market right now, especially here in Wichita - and with the downturn they are expecting the economy to make (even more than now) she should probably get her house on the market soon if she is serious about selling...

gster, I've long held the opinion that Inauguration Day should be a national holiday, regardless of who the outgoing President may be.

VT- My suggestion was strictly tongue-in-cheek facetiousness. I've often wondered what the "National Mood" will be on that long awaited day. ???

However, some of us think we will have even more reason to celebrate this inauguration day! We will face what we got in the elections later, just let us have one full day to celebrate HE IS GONE! In my lifetime I've never been this disappointed in an elected official.

What do you guys think about the great amount of media time spent on wondering whether Hillary will / should drop out if she loses in today's primaries / caucuses? Why does there need to be a rush? And is there really any great fear the Super Delegates will vote against the wishes of the voters? Are they stupid enough?

The Democratic Convention isn't until late August so I don't see a reason to rush to a single candidate. In fact, I like having two strong candidates for the nomination of the Democratic Party. I think it keeps the two more on task and the competition is great for the voters. I want to hear more and more because I strongly feel one of these two people will be the next president of the United States.

Linda, one of the problems with the continuing campaign between Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama is the drain on the money, which allows Sen. McCain to raise more and plan. Further, the "dead period" between the last primary (Puerto Rico, IIRC) and the convention will allow McCain's team to look microscopically at the attacks each will be making on the other, which allows them to hone their message.

This is not to suggest that Sen. Clinton, should she lose today in any one or all four primaries, etc., should drop out of the race; far from it. I just want to point out some problems with the way things are scheduled, and the potential for fall out therefrom.

The only reason I would be eager for a nominee to come out ahead in these primaries, and perhaps secure the election, is so that I can start doing my research NOW to make my decision on who to vote for come November... :)

Wendy,

I'm with you on that last comment. I may be 'conservative', but I believe 'moderate' is more accurate but I won't vote for a particular candidate because said candidate is one party or the other.
