God is a Jayhawk

OPEN THREADS

"O Lord our Father, our young Jayhawks, idols of our hearts, go forth to the National Championship -- be Thou near them!

With them -- in spirit -- we also go forth from the sweet peace of our couches and TV sets to smite the unworthy foe. O Lord our God, help us to tear their man to man defense to shreds; help us to cover their three point shooters like white on rice; help us to silence the delight of the record setting team from Memphis with the shrieks of their fans, writhing in disbelief; help us to fast break with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending Alumni with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out winless, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the Championship and denied it -- for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their shooting arms, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, block their way with tenacious D!

We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

Without examining the theological basis of the Jayhawk Prayer, as I believe it is called, thinking about the game upcoming in some 7 hours, 11 minutes (as I write) has me very nervous. Solution; stop thinking!

He is a Republican and a Jayhawk? Cool!

I'm nervous, anxious, excited - can you even imagine how those young men who play the game feel??

Even though my college paperwork says I bleed purple, I'm a Kansan through and through. Way to go KU! Everything that had to happen to get the game into overtime happened.

Consuming outrageously large quantities of coffee this morning...

What a game! I'll admit that I was resigned to another loss in the NC game at the 2 minute mark, but, the KU players did what they needed to do and Memphis players' free throw shooting woes caught up with them. Once Mario Chalmers' shot fell, tying the game with 2.1 seconds left, I knew that with one of the Memphis starters already fouled out, KU would win.

One thing I didn't like was when KU went to the "Box and One" in the second half, it seemed to give Memphis a spark on offense. I do not proclaim to be a coach, but that made no sense. I think it was done for two reasons: the ability of Chris Douglas-Roberts to drive to the basket, and that KU's players were a bit tired. Luckily, not too much damage was done.

Back to the coffee (wonder if direct IV would be effective?), and hopefully to work (although I'd rather be in Lawrence this afternoon)....

How great this feels! Wow. I also had wrapped my mind around a loss when they were down nine with only a couple minutes left. Then, as Danny said, EVERYTHING that had to happen to bring about overtime did happen. Karma.

In the brief break between regulation and overtime play my phone rang. It was oldest daughter Tonya and she said, "Hey, I've got time to chat awhile. Nothing going on at your house, is there?" She didn't get the giggle out of her voice even in those two sentences. We both knew OT favored the Jayhawks. Then I had a text message from Chad at the end of the game. It was already an hour later for him so he probably didn't want to get into a phone conversation with an excited Mom at that hour.

So all is good. It did take a bit to calm down enough to find sleep and I think I had just gotten there when Mother Nature started with celebratory fireworks. I'm glad I'm a bum. Not too much that can't wait until tomorrow. ;-)
